How did I get here?

I am sitting here in a fog; a young woman, which I took under my wing, unexpectedly lost her dad. She refers to me as an additional mother figure in her life, even though I am only 10 years older.

How did I get here? I have struggled with my own identity, my own worthiness, and my own purpose. How did I become the source of her strength? Her go to? Her mentor? Her advisor? Why am I being charged with pouring into the life of an adult; when I am still trying to figure out how to raise my own child?

Her dad meant the world to her. In between her sobs, I feel as though my heart being ripped out. You see, she is an only child by her dad. This is closer to my heart and my fears because my daughter, too, is an only child. When I hear the hurt, pain and sorrow in her voice, it brings me to tears. Tears that fall so freely; sorrow that has caused me tears regarding my decision to have my tubes tied 12 years ago. Now my child may have to experience this same pain, alone.

I often ask the question; why me? What is it about my family and I that allow people to be vulnerable with us? Why do people seek our counsel and opinion? Why are we individually and collectively, the lifeline of some many? We open our hearts and home to those in need. "Mi CASA Es su CASA" is a phrase that we live by.

During my conversation with my friend this morning (5.15.15), she said, "When I make it back to the city, I need to come home for a few days." Right then, I knew why. I am charged with shaping lives and providing a one of a kind place of solace. My family and I are more powerful together. The love that we have for each other overflows into the lives of those that we touch.

Why is this situation blog worthy? I am so glad that question was in my spirit. It is blog worthy because it has changed how I value relationships. Culture has brainwashed us to expect accolades when we do our basic duties. When a child is born, he/she his born unto two parents; those parents are to care for that child, for a lifetime. One should not accept a pat on the back for doing what is expected of him or her. The pat comes in when things are done with excellence (i.e. academic brilliance, entrepreneurial brilliance, brilliant sportsmanship). Those are gifts that must first be recognized, cultivated, and demonstrated in life.

I do not celebrate my husband because he is a good man. I celebrate him because he goes above the call of duty for his family; not just physically but spiritually, as well. He constantly raises the barre (touché) for his daughter’s spiritual and natural health. He is giving her a skillset that will make a huge difference if her life. A lot like our “adoptive” daughter’s father set her up. I have only known her for 8 months but she has taught me more about me.

I am not striving to be a good wife, mom, woman, or friend. My everyday goal is to be an excellent asset to any path that I might cross. Everyone has the power to be anything they want to be. Choices of good and bad will shape the rivers, oceans, streams, and lakes in which we ultimately swim, float or drown.

I am challenging myself to be excellent in all areas. The passing of my friend’s dad taught me that if my life’s decisions looks like the outcome of another, chances are I have more in common with people that do not look like me; but they in turn think like me and I like them.

My strides towards excellent will eventually come natural to me. If the reflection in the mirror is not thriving, most likely the fruit of the spirit is just as lifeless. People will judge your reputation by what they see - show 'em ya good side. I am the change. I am the light. Together, we can be the platform to life.

Doubt - Death's cousin

I want to write my own eulogy - I want to tell my own story, after all, who can tell my story better than me? I want to make my absence, from this life, as painless as possible when it is my time. These thoughts came flooding into my head as I sat in a balcony seat, overlooking my surroundings, at my cousin's funeral.
I have always been terrified of death. I was down right afraid of dead people, partly because they never look like themselves and partly because they are cold, lifeless, or their families are in mourning. Mainly, because I did not understand what would happen to their souls, until now. Death, is a natural part of life's cycle, but it is always unnatural, inconvenient, and too soon when it is someone that you love.
Doubt, is a powerful tool, when allowed to fester is one of the biggest faith crushers known to man. I know doubt all too well. As a matter of fact, we come in contact quite often. I doubt my choices, my life, my decisions and sometimes my direction. It is a true definition of "the struggle is real."
Oh, I forgot to mention, that sometimes I even doubt God, that's right, I said it. Prayer, is the counterbalance to that doubt. I am always in constant prayer aloud, in silence, and in conversing with other people. You see, I know my weaknesses - I know when, where, and how I fall short of JAH's glory; constant prayer is necessary for me.
Why did I start this blog about death only to talk about doubt? Well, from MY perspective, they are intertwined, they are cousins. When one's life is doubt-stricken they are too afraid to live, which is essentially a painful and poisonous death. Reflecting over my cousin's life, she was the poster child for "living" of life of love, as well as, walking in perpetual forgiveness.
When I went through my tough time a couple of years ago, I doubted everything, my faith, my life, my beliefs, my marriage, myself, my future, my family, my friends, my world. I had unquestionably poured into everything that I was a part of, and yet, I was full of doubt and confusion.
Who’s fault was it? God’s, the devil's, or mine? I chose the latter. I chose to be accountable for my actions. I could not; I would not give the devil credit because he is not omnipresent. He does not have any power, unless I choose to give it to him. I had to learn (painfully), that I am not a victim of circumstance. I am not the crop of past generations strongholds. I will not go with broken tradition or deeply rooted poison, because my God is bigger, better, and MORE than enough for me. Doubt was rampant in my life because of my choices. I could have chosen differently but decided against it.
When it all seems to be off track. When it appears that doubt is winning and death is inevitable, change your outlook on life and snatch your faith in order, quickly. If you have forgotten, let me remind you: we all have the power to change, my cousin taught me that. We reap what we sow - either we can wallow in the product of the harvest, or we can simply replant the crop, you decide. Be the change. Be the light. Be the Platform To Life.~jess

Boundaries: How many of us have them?

Boundaries, how many of us have them? YIKES!!!  I just realized that I began to establish boundaries a little over two years ago. It took me decades to step outside of my comfort zone, to take some time for myself, by myself. Marriage – no boundaries. Parenting – no boundaries. Friendships – no boundaries. Relationships – no boundaries. For the most part, everything that I touched or everyone that I encountered, I failed to establish a healthy boundary.

The ever so cliché saying, “when you know better, you do better,” is so far from the truth. Almost everyone that I know has some type of vice that is NOT good for them; yet, they do it anyway…myself included. It is amazing the conviction that comes upon a person when their spiritual senses are heightened; it is equally amazing the struggle between flesh and spirit once surrender takes place.

Prior to 2012 – I cared more about the words of man than I cared about the wrath of God. I allowed so many to voice their opinion of what should take place in my life. “Oh, you should not allow that.” “Oh that cannot be healthy.” Or my favorite – “if I were you.” It is astonishing the amount of broken people that will offer broken advice to those who are just as broken. Marriage advice from  a divorcee/single person or an unhealthy couple. Parenting advice from a childless source or an unhealthy, unstable parent. I mean – everyone knew what was good for me but oblivious to what was best for them.

Stop it. I had to stop it. I found myself hyperventilating, dazed, confused, and exhausted. This could not be LIFE. Friendships that I thought were solid began to slowly drift apart. My marriage was strained because of my addiction to please and make everyone happy. My daughter began to  feel the weight of my distractions or lack of boundaries.

I had a problem; a problem with saying:  NO – and sticking to it. Oh! I am a big girl now and the desire to appease the masses does not live here anymore. I have found my voice. I have reinvented myself. I have established boundaries. I have stopped placing expectations on people. I have learned to love people right in the presence of their storm/paradise. I have learned in any sport, corporation, healthy relationship, or anything else life has to offer – there are boundaries, often called: rules, guidelines, policies, and/or procedures. In order for my life to be elevated to the next level, I had to levy the confines of my life. In doing just that little thing, it has lifted a weight from my shoulders. It has made my existing relationships great. It has situated a solid foundation for my future relationships. I will no longer invest precious time cultivating relationships that will only add to my ever so full plate. I will listen to JAH’S voice and loosen my need for control and rest in the boundaries of covenant relationships sent for Him, by Him.

Sometimes, it takes losing yourself, in order to re-invent yourself. Most people do not like change – as a matter of fact, they loathe change when it upsets their lives. If one constantly give themselves  away but never take the time to replenish; not only does being selfless out of season becomes a detriment to the health – it becomes dangerous to the soul. If at the end of the day, you are drained from LIFE, then I suggest you check your boundaries (or get you some) and do the following: Be the change. Be the light. Be the Platform to Life. ~jess

Servant’s heart in a selfish world

In the King James Version of the Bible, the word “servant” occurs over 880 times. Servant is defined as a person employed in a house on domestic duties or as a personal attendant. Another definition describes a servant as a devoted and helpful follower or supporter. It seems to me that being a servant is a pretty big deal.

I did not become a servant overnight.  Although, my parents planted the seed of servant hood long ago in my fabric of life. In fact, my circumstances fertilized the seed and my situations watered that very seed, over 30 decades ago. I would like to pay homage to my parents for equipping me with the tools to stand out, thanks Mom and Dad!

I once lived in a selfish world where entitlement penetrated every cell of my body. I often felt that because I paid for a service, it gave me the right to behave in an ungrateful and unpleasant manner. Boy! Did Yahweh have fun with me! During my times of selfishness, I never stopped to think about the mind frame of the person I was encountering. Maybe they were having a bad day; after all they are covered in flesh, too. Should they be exempt from bad days because of their line of work? Then, I begin to quiz myself, “how often did my bad days follow me to and from work? Or how often did I leave my emotions from work or home at the door?” Self-reflection, when done right, is a powerful tool.

As I meandered through my life, I had an expectation that I was owed something. Not only did I realize err of my ways, but those of the people around me, who were just as selfish. Wives do not openly serve their husbands because reality television only glorifies the false success of marriage. Husbands do not openly serve their wives because it is considered a man code violation. Parents do not openly serve their children because after all, they are only children. People do not openly serve God because it is not conducive to their lifestyles.

OH! Now, I see why I had to travel the bumpy road of life. I had to be humbled, in order to learn how to be a joyful servant. I had to learn to be a wife, an excellent wife. My husband’s needs come before my own. It does not matter the task, I go into it happily and ready. It has changed how we interact. My husband has learned how to serve me. I randomly get phone calls asking, “Babe, how can I make your day better, today? Or how can I put a smile on your face?” That small gesture completely changed our marriage. If I am second to him and he is second to me but God is first to us, then being last is a moot point! I had to learn to be a mother, an excellent mother. Not only do I nurture our daughter but I am readying our daughter to one day become a wife and a mother. In order for her to avoid the statistics of becoming a divorcee or baby mama, I have to pour into her a skillset, that she will need later in life. I am a servant of Yeshua, I am not excellent yet, but with Yahweh’s grace and mercy, it is all I need to continue walking in the Light.

When I take a hasty peek into the lives of those around me, I notice that we all hold the power of choice. We can choose to serve other people but miss the opportunity to do so, simply because we are too prideful. We choose to walk out on marriages and relationships because we always think of our selfish needs but never the needs of others. We choose folks to father/mother our children but then we call them deadbeats/crazy but we never stop to think about the moment in which sperm penetrates egg; that selfish moment of passion equates to a lifetime of erratic behavior. We always manage to put ourselves in situations but then quickly expect Yahweh to bail us out because we are selfish with our lives.

In writing this blog, I have realized that I still have a lot of work to do. I have the choice and opportunity to serve everyone in my direct correlation. I have the opportunity to use my servant nature, to make someone’s day better 7 days a week, even if I feel like my situation is better or my money is bigger. If I am in the business of building a legacy, it has to stretch out further than my family. Are you a servant or are you selfish? Do you compare your meaningless material possessions to that of another? How do you expect to have people treat you any differently than you treat them? If you are honest with yourself, like I had to be honest with myself, then I suggest we all do the following. Be the change. Be the light. Be the platform to life.

LIFE: Part 2 - PARENTING

A little over fourteen years ago, I heard the news: "You are pregnant!" I was ecstatic that I was charged with rearing a child. A girl child. I began practicing my parenting skills long before I ever conceived. Yes, I received on-the-job training, whilst caring for my nephews, my niece, and/or my friends’ children. It was only fair for me to think that I was a self-proclaimed "professional" mother. Ha! Self-reflection is simply the best reflection.
As the summer of 2000 was drawing to an end, my new life as a mommy was just about to launch. My boyfriend, turned husband, and I were fervent to welcome our little bundle of joy into the world. Our world was perfect. We were ready; hospital bag packed, Lamaze classes completed, cradle assembled, and all of her little clothes smelled like Dreft detergent. However, three weeks before my scheduled due date, my tenacious and beautiful daughter, decided that her time was NOW and there was no time to waste.
The first phone call was made to my mom, around midnight, to let her know that my water was leaking. Shortly, after the call, reality hit and my excitement quickly turned to anxiousness. I had a million questions going on in my head, not to mention my heart was pumping a trillion beats per minute. Can I really be a good mom? What if the name we chose did not fit her face, or her personality? Wait! My mom is not here! She is not scheduled to come for another three weeks; can I do this in her absence? Where is my “mommy" handbook? The tiny voice in my head said, “Settle down and do not forget to breathe.” My mom instructed me to call the hospital, explain the current situation, and then call her back. I followed directives only to arrive at the hospital, in premature labor, just past  2 a.m..  Sixteen hours after “the leak,” my life’s course changed, forever.
It was love at first sight! I was head-over-heels in love with this tiny little person. It was a love that I cannot explain; a love that stimulated my maternal instincts. My baby was perfect, she was healthy, she was beautiful, and she was mine. Her name was a suitable match for her face and her divine nature. She was the tangible meaning of God’s love for us; she mattered to me, and I would protect her at all cost.

Years passed and she grew, she grew up as a valiant and radiant young lady. She was so full of compassion, love, and discernment. She was not as trusting with people as I had been in my youth, thank God for righting that wrong. She was wired to analyze a situation before stepping into it; that is a gift, a gift that should be enhanced and cultivated. How could I do that? How could I possibly develop and cultivate another life when I had been broken, battered, and bruised?
2012, (if you’ve read any of my other blogs, then you will know that was a tough year for us) rolled around and I, as a parent, lost focus. I was not as attentive to my daughter as I had been in the years past. I loosened my reigns because I was knee-deep in my own “sheep.” My daughter was faced with making a choice of living with her daddy or her mommy. Her family was torn and she was stuck in the middle. My God, how would we possibly rebound from this tragedy? After all, I was the person that vowed to protect her, at all cost, but I had simply betrayed her trust. I had walked out on her to plan my new life.
Could I have ruined her because I was being selfish with my desires? She had never known any other life. It had always been the three of us. Could she, or better yet, would she ever trust me again? What if I left her to think "the" split was her fault. Maybe, just maybe, she thought she could have done something differently to keep her family together.  What she did not realize was her mommy, me, with my whole heart, felt as though I was making the best decision. The best decision for both of us; a sole decision that I would later come to regret.

I have heard all of my life, “you do not stay because of the kids.” “Live your life and the kids will adapt.” My precious baby girl was going to be a statistic of this “disposable” society, all because I was looking for a worldly happiness that did not exist. If I did not get a grip on chasing “life’s happiness,” her perception of life, relationships, love, and trust would be skewed. My attempt to justify my actions were along the lines of: “I’m tired of sacrificing my happiness,” or “I have already given up all of me, what is left to give?” I never stopped for one moment to think of my daughter’s feelings, her emotions, her needs, her expectations, or her future womanhood/motherhood. The one thing I NEVER said was “God, give me the wisdom, strength, and tools to keep my family together.” Without hesitation, I packed my bags and moved four states away to start a new chapter in my book of life.
Roughly, two weeks after I sought my new beginning, I was in transit back to Texas to attend my daughter’s final dance recital of the season. Prior to my return, the interaction between my husband and I were screaming bouts, often ending with harsh words, or abrupt hang-ups. Man, if I could not function; how on earth could I expect my “preteen” daughter too? The truth is a hard pill to swallow, especially when you know you are wrong. My truth of me not leaving in an adult-like manner and playing the victim to my circumstances, was there waiting for my return, in the form of my family. That is right; I had to face my impromptu wrong way of leaving.
Now, that I am fully aware that God is always in control, even when we are disobedient and crass. When I said I was tired, He said “take a break.” When I said I could not take another step, He said “they are already ordered and I will carry you.” When I said I cannot put another ounce of effort into it, He said “finally, you have hit bottom and I can take control; Rest!”
It would not be for another few months, after I returned to my home in Texas, that I would have a spiritual encounter with God. My encounter would be powerful enough for me to humble myself and ask my daughter for forgiveness. I would not realize until the weakest point of my life, that God would show Himself true by allowing my daughter to grab my hand and say, “Oh mommy, I forgave you, when you left and before you came back.” There is a different sense of confidence building in children when a parent is big enough or small enough to ask a child for forgiveness. It puts the ball back in their court and gives them the authority to make a decision to be forgiving.
For the last two years of my life, I have been in the process of rebuilding a relationship with a resilient and God-fearing young woman. I will say, I respect her faith. I can say she is a bigger woman than most women that I see. Her voice is loud and it does matter. The calling on her life is huge because she is destined for greatness. She is so full of love, compassion, and empathy. She may bend but she will not break; her spiritual foundation has been laid and her purpose has been planned.
I made up my mind long before I became a mother, that I would not pass on my noticeable flaws to any of the children that I bear. My daughter has taught me the first and second rules of life: 1. how to love and 2.how to forgive. The old folks used to say, “children are to be seen and not heard,” and the new folks say, “children are to be seen AND heard.” The old way of parenting has led us to a new generation of non-parents; there simply has to be balance. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord all the days of our lives and when He speaks, we listen. We are no longer individuals operating as such; we are a well-tuned, well-oiled machine operating as a unit. When one of us has something to say we hold a family meeting and we talk through it. Our previous methodology of individual thinking allowed us to be divided and conquered; our joy came the morning that our sensitivity to God’s will was revealed in our lives.
In this blog, I had to be brutally honest with myself. It was imperative that I got my head out of the clouds or I would have dragged my kid through MY mud. She would have been a casualty because of my lack of direction. Personally, I know so many parents that operate out of a state of frustration, hurt, pain or repetitive previous generational/cultural behaviors. Those parents do not realize, their children are just as hurt, confused, and indecisive; why would they be any different? Three of my favorite “P” words are: Perception. Perseverance. Purpose. Your life’s purpose will dictate your child’s perception of how life should be. Their perception will shape their ability to persevere in the midst of adversity.
If you are looking for the “correct” way to raise children in a fallen world, you must look within yourself, assess your life, and check your spiritual temperature. Place realistic expectations upon your child(ren), stop expecting them to be something that you are not capable of displaying or being; but do encourage them to be better than you, encourage them to be bigger than you; encourage them to be more excellent than you. Remember, the only way to break a generational stronghold is to keep the Word of God in your mouth, as well as, change what the previous generation instilled. Children are "typically" a reflection of their parents mental, spiritual, and physical state. What does your child’s reflection say about you; better yet, what does your reflection say about you as a parent? If the reflection is smoke in mirrors or unpleasant to look at, then I suggest you do the following: Be the change. Be the light. Be the platform to life. ~jess

LIFE

What happens when you are a control freak and everything has to have a rhyme as well as a reason? What happens when your bottom falls out and you find yourself grasping at straws, bricks, and or even illusions of your imagination? What happens when every relationship that you’ve ever had is hanging in the balance?

In my moment of self-reflection, I can tell you what happened to me, I failed. I failed at everything including, career, family, self, and most importantly the spiritual connectedness. Everything I poured into, merely spilled out.  Everything I touched, crumbled. Everything I thought to be satisfactory,  turned out to be fragmented and hollow. Surely, this could not have been the plan for my life.

I had absolutely no sacred place to go. I had given up everything that I’d worked so hard to attain. I had taken pride in life’s accomplishments; the life that I had built brick, by brick, by brick. Why was it so easy to give it up, to walk away from it? Could it have been that I was chasing “life’s happiness?” Could it have been that I was yearning for a life of freedom with the lack of responsibility, or complexity?

Life was destined to happen to me, even when I felt as though I was in control. Course-plotting the topography of life was not my area of expertise. I had no idea how obtuse people were to the needs of others. I had no clue that life’s obstacles were set before me to contour and frame me; giving me the edge that I needed to be an excellent daughter to the King, an excellent wife to my husband, an excellent  mother to my child, and an excellent, productive, spiritual, contributing member to society. Life was happening to me, at a fast pace, and on a bumpy terrain, simply, because I failed to be obedient; failed to do the right thing all the time, even when no one was looking. I failed to be disciplined; but most importantly, I failed to be honest and transparent about my emotions.

My life as a wife has not always been proper or even in order. As a matter of fact, I did not even know how to be a good wife. I knew how to just be; not fully aware of knowing what it meant to completely submit to the headship of my husband.  I did what I thought was right; or was it simply MY reality of what is/was right? I denied my husband opportunities to be intimate with me. Not only did I open the door for a possible affair, but I paved the way. You see, as a young wife, I always made excuses of why it was not a good time ranging from:  I have to take care of the kid; I am tired; or blatantly, I don’t feel like it, so please find someone that is interested.  When it happened, whose fault was it or whose fault will it be? Mine? His? God’s?

I am a big enough woman to say, "it is no one’s fault", simply, because we are all wired the same way; that longing to be wanted and loved. I made a mistake and I own/owned it. Yes, we all know what is right, and we are aware of our moral responsibilities to our mates.  In all honesty, how often do we ALWAYS do what is right? It is  funny how we can stand firm in decisions, only when we are not faced with life changing situations. Case and point, I remember saying in my younger years, “If I caught my husband cheating on me, our relationship would be over.” Oh wait, this is my favorite line,  “I haven’t given you a reason to cheat, so if that’s what you want to do, then that’s where you should stay.” I know what some of you are thinking, oh, “She can’t possibly be that ill-advised. Why would she stay in an unhealthy relationship?”  Listen, and hear me when you read this:  if I did not know how to be a good wife,  how can I expect him to be a good husband? If I say, “please go elsewhere for your satisfaction” in one breath, and “I love you” in the next, why would he believe one and not the other? If I’m a worldly woman operating out of the flesh and he is a worldly man doing the same, then we ALL know that the flesh wins 99.99% of the time, especially, where there is no spiritual or self-discipline, so we must expect a worldly outcome. Why, is it okay to place an expectation upon him, that I don’t have upon me?  Why should I hold him accountable for his actions but yet I hide so vulnerably behind mine?

Life has a way of teaching us very valuable lessons. Thus far, I’ve learned we have power to speak life or death in our marriages, finances, future, and family.  I have learned we all make mistakes; they are a part of growing pains. I have learned when we have a spiritual connectedness, there are different expectations and anticipations placed upon relationships. I have learned sometimes, it is best to hit rock bottom to appreciate the good things. I have learned sometimes tearing down the structural walls and demolishing the foundations of relationships, are two of the best ways to rebuild.  I have learned even if life does hand me lemons, there are still some key ingredients that are missing, (check out my other blog) in order to make lemonade. I have learned through it all, God controls the ending, both, in this life and the next.

If you have not learned to be a Kindom wife, then you should not expect a Kingdom husband, or vice versa. If you have not learned to be a good wife, then you should not expect a good husband. The key to a successful worldly marriage is very simple; it is fairness. Even, if you are not in love be fair and you will go far. The keys to a successful Kingdom marriage are as follows: God, communication, and finally expectation.

If you have yet to learn how to be transparent with yourself or take accountability for your decisions, then you are deceiving those in your sphere of influence. If you are a speaking negative jargon into current situations, then you have to be willing to accept the undesirable outcome. Here is my challenge to you; declare life with every breath that you take. If you have not learned to embrace the obstacles set before you, or use them as stepping stones, to build and inspire others, then you are truly missing out on what life has to offer. Remember, check your life’s temperature and do the following: Be the change. Be the light. Be the platform to life. #TP2L ~jess
